Start a peptide paper with two questions: who was studied, and what was measured? Then examine the comparison, sample size, follow-up and adverse effects. Cell and animal findings inform mechanisms; claims about human benefits need relevant human evidence.
What can each study design answer?
Swipe the table sideways on small screens.
| Design | Helps examine | Still check |
|---|---|---|
| Cells or animals | Mechanisms and early hypotheses | Whether findings translate to people |
| Human observational study | Associations and patterns | Alternative explanations and confounding |
| Randomized trial | Effects under a defined comparison | Population, outcomes and follow-up relevant to the claim |
A design label is a starting point; quality and relevance still matter. A small or short study may answer one question without answering another. NIH clinical research basics.
What do phases 1–4 mean?
Typically, phase 1 examines initial safety, phase 2 explores effects and further safety, phase 3 tests confirmation in larger groups, and phase 4 follows an approved intervention. Reaching a phase does not validate every possible claim. Purposes of clinical-trial phases.
Match the measurement to the claimed benefit
A blood marker, fat-free mass and daily function are different outcomes. For example, a 2021 MOTS-c paper measured the naturally occurring peptide after exercise in people while testing administration in mice. Those parts answer different questions. The MOTS-c research example.
Check five details in the registry
- Compound and study identity.
- Participant eligibility and number.
- Comparator and specified primary outcome.
- Whether recruitment is ongoing, completed or terminated.
- Whether results or a full report are available.
Reading a ClinicalTrials.gov record. An NCT number identifies a registered record; it does not mean government approval of a product or endorsement of its safety. What registry listing means.
Keep context in a short summary
Write: “This study examined ___ in ___ versus ___, measuring ___ over ___. It found ___ and did not answer ___.” Attach the original source. This practical template makes the limits of the conclusion visible alongside the finding.
Frequently asked questions
Are animal studies unhelpful?
They help investigate mechanisms and hypotheses. Separate their contribution from evidence establishing human benefit or safety.
Does an NCT number mean approval?
No. It identifies a study record, not an approved product.
Can one paper establish an effect for everyone?
Check who was studied, what was measured and whether other research supports or challenges the finding. Keep conclusions within the evidence.
